When Will You Receive Your Tax Refund?

Usually, the IRS issues most tax refunds within 21 days of electronic filing (six weeks if a mailed paper return). However, due to the recent government shutdown, refunds may take longer this tax season.

Taxpayers can check the status of their refund withing 24 hours after submitting their e-filed return (four weeks if mailed a paper return) by either (1) accessing the IRS Website (link here) or (2) accessing the IRS Mobile App  (link here).  In order to access information as to their refund, taxpayers will need to provide the following information:

  • Their Social Security number
  • Their tax filing status
  • The exact whole dollar amount of their refund

Once the correct information is provided, taxpayers will be able to access information as to (1) date IRS receives the tax return ; (2) date IRS approves the refund; and (3) date IRS sends the refund.

The fact that the IRS provides information as to when the IRS receives the return, the Where is My Refund? tool, serves as a valuable to determine that the return was properly delivered to the IRS, and will help taxpayers avoid late filing penalties.

Taxpayers who file an amended return should check out the Where’s My Amended Return? tool to check on the status of their refund.

...and as final reminder, the deadline for individuals to file their 2018 income taxes is Monday, April 15, 2019
